How it all startedgreenhouses1963 copie

Odette and Louis Legault established Legault Greenhouses (Les Serres Legault) in 1963 at their Cassburn Road property near L’Orignal.  The whole family pitched in to ensure the success of the venture, the first of its kind in the area. The labour-intensive preparation of seedlings, as well as the transplanting of indoor and outdoor plants all took place in the same greenhouses where people from the area – both veteran and neophyte gardeners – came to buy flowers, vegetable plants, shrubs and other gardening needs.

Next, Legaults opened a stall at the Byward Market on Ottawa, where their hanging baskets, fine herbs, pumpkins, ornamental and edible squashes were a hit with shoppers in the nation’s capital.

In 1982, the torch of the family business was passed to the next generation when François Legault and his wife Diane assumed ownership of Les Serres Legault with its 10,000 square feet of greenhouse space and twelve acres of land.

In 2003, François and Diane made a major business decision, opening the Garden Centre on Highway 34 in Hawkesbury.  It opened its doors in May 2004 under the name Les Serres Legault, Legault Greenhouses.  The greenhouses on Cassburn Road remain in service but are now reserved for propagating stock which is then transferred to the retail location at Hawkesbury.  Every spring since 2004, François and Diane along with sons Pascal and Jonathan (a third generation of horticulturists) have been serving up a feast for the eyes of delighted customers. The family now operates more than 50,000 square feet of greenhouse space and employs twenty-six full-time workers during the growing season.
